Amy Grant

It was so easy to schedule this appointment online and the service happened quickly. I sent my online request on Friday night and Henry was at my door first thing Saturday morning. Henry was courteous, polite, and friendly and explained what needed to be done. The first repair made didn’t 100% solve our toilet issue, so he made sure to recheck everything and ended up replacing a part that he needed to go out and get. Henry was respectful of my time and my home and I appreciate that. Will definitely use this company again!

What Does MERV Mean?

When browsing for air conditioning filters, you’ve probably noticed a number on the packaging known as the MERV rating. Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value is a standard that measures how effectively a filter captures particles from the air passing through it. The scale ranges from 1 to 20, and the higher numbers indicate a greater ability to trap small particles like dust, pollen, mold spores, and even bacteria. For most homes, a MERV rating between 8 and 13 is recommended, because this balances efficiency and airflow without overworking your system. Filters with ratings above 13 are typically used in hospitals or clean rooms and might restrict airflow too much for residential HVAC systems. Your trusted HVAC company can help determine the best MERV rating for your specific air conditioning setup.

7 Popular Types of Air Filters

Here’s a breakdown of seven common air filter types for home air conditioning systems:

We Provide All Types of Professional HVAC Services

Tailored services to meet your specific needs and budget, ensuring optimal performance and comfort.

  • Fiberglass Filters: These are the most basic type of air filters, often found in older systems. Made from layered fiberglass fibers, they’re affordable but not very effective at capturing smaller particles. While they might be enough for homes without allergy concerns, frequent replacement is necessary to avoid strain on your system and prevent an air conditioning repair.
  • Pleated Filters: Pleated filters offer an upgrade over fiberglass by providing more surface area to capture particles. They come in various MERV ratings, typically ranging from 6 to 13, making them a versatile option for most households. Pleated filters are effective at trapping allergens and other small particles, making them a solid choice for homes with pets or allergy sufferers. However, it’s important to replace them regularly to prevent airflow restrictions that could lead to air conditioning replacement needs down the line.
  • HEPA Filters: High-efficiency particulate Air filters capture up to 99.97% of particles and are commonly used in settings that require ultra-clean air, such as hospitals. While incredibly effective, HEPA filters can be too restrictive for most residential HVAC systems unless specifically designed to accommodate them.
  • Electrostatic Filters: Electrostatic filters use self-charging fibers to attract and capture particles, and work similarly to a magnet. They are available in disposable and washable forms. Washable versions are environmentally friendly and can be a cost-effective long-term solution if maintained correctly.
  • UV Filters: These filters use ultraviolet light as a weapon against bacteria, viruses, and mold spores that pass through your HVAC system. These filters are typically used in combination with other filter types to improve air quality. While effective against microorganisms, UV filters do not capture dust or other particles, so pairing them with a high MERV pleated filter is often recommended for comprehensive air cleaning.
  • Activated Carbon Filters: These filters remove odors, gasses, and certain chemicals. They are infused with charcoal, which absorbs impurities that other filters might miss. While not as efficient at capturing dust or pollen, activated carbon filters are ideal for homes with pets, smokers, or anyone sensitive to odors. Pairing with a pleated filter can provide balanced air filtration and odor control.
  • Washable Filters: Washable filters, often made from aluminum or plastic mesh, offer the benefit of reusability. These filters can be used multiple times, so they are a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice. However, their efficiency varies with MERV ratings typically lower than disposable options, so they may not be suitable for homes with specific air quality concerns.

Choosing the Right Filter

When selecting an air filter, it’s important to consider factors beyond just the type and MERV rating. Think about your household's specific needs. Do you have pets, allergies, or concerns about indoor air quality? Also, consider your HVAC system’s specifications and speak with your HVAC company to ensure compatibility and optimal performance. Balancing filtration efficiency with adequate airflow is necessary to avoid system stress and the associated costs of an air conditioning repair or air conditioning replacement.

Do You Need Help Maintaining Your Filters?

Most filters should be checked and replaced every 30 to 90 days, depending on usage, type, and household conditions. Homes with pets, smokers, or high occupancy may require more frequent changes. Keeping up with filter maintenance is one of the simplest ways to extend the life of your system and avoid costly air conditioning replacement. At Service Hero, we’re here to help you make the best choice for your air conditioning needs, whether it’s finding the right filter or providing air conditioning repair and replacement services.
