Did you know that around 10% of homes have water leaks that waste 90 gallons or more of water per day? Data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show that a significant portion of homes experience leaks that go undetected for a long period of time. Older homes are particularly vulnerable due to aging pipes and plumbing systems, but even newly constructed homes can develop leaks. As a homeowner, it’s your responsibility to put in place preventive measures to minimize the risk of leaks and to detect them quickly when they do occur.

Bobby Hett

We had a main line drain clog under the house. Russell was our technician and approached the problem from outside the house, working retrograde from a trap in the front yard. I was skeptical but it worked when my efforts with a cable inside the house had failed. He was very professional and pleasant to deal with.  We asked him to install a cleanout closer to the house for future use and we were very satisfied with the work.

Tyler is the best! He came to our parent's house, knew exactly what the problem was, and explained it to us without the typical guesswork. I'd recommend him any time you need a good plumber.

Early leak detection can save you money on water bills and prevent water damage to your property. In today’s post, our plumbers at Service Hero outline some of the cutting-edge leak detection solutions that experts utilize to protect homes from the damaging effects of water leaks.

  • Acoustic Leak Detection

This cutting-edge technology uses highly sensitive microphones and amplifiers to listen for the subtle sounds of escaping water. Professional plumbers can use these devices to identify the location of leaks within walls, under floors, or even underground by analyzing the specific frequencies and patterns of the sounds.

We Provide Professional Plumbing & HVAC Services

Tailored services to meet your specific needs and budget, ensuring optimal performance and comfort.

  • Thermal Imaging

Thermal cameras detect temperature differences caused by water leaks. This method is non-invasive and can be used to identify leaks behind walls, ceilings, and under floors without requiring any demolition. This innovative leak detection technology can be used to detect both small leaks and large-scale water damage in commercial complexes.

  • Tracer Dye

This method involves adding a colored dye to the water system. The dye will then seep out at the leak point, making it visually identifiable. This is a useful technique for locating leaks in visible pipes or in areas where the leak is suspected but difficult to pinpoint. Different colored dyes can be used to trace multiple leaks simultaneously.

  • Moisture Meters

As the name suggests, moisture meters measure the moisture content in building materials like walls, floors, and ceilings. High moisture readings can indicate a leak, even if it's not immediately visible. These devices come in various types, including pin-type meters that penetrate the surface and non-invasive meters that use electromagnetic fields to detect moisture beneath the surface. You don’t need any specialized knowledge to use these devices. They can be purchased at most hardware stores or online, and they usually come with clear instructions.

  • Video Camera Inspection

For leaks within pipes, a small camera attached to a flexible cable is inserted into the pipe to visually inspect its interior. The camera sends real-time video footage to a monitor, through which a plumbing technician visually evaluates the condition of the pipe. Video camera inspection allows trained plumbers to identify the exact location and nature of the leak, as well as any other issues like blockages or corrosion. This innovative technology is particularly useful for locating leaks in sewer lines and other inaccessible pipes. Plumbing technicians can also use it to identify potential issues that could cause a host of problems down the road. It’s advisable to schedule a video camera inspection on a regular basis to catch plumbing issues in their tracks.
