We had a main line drain clog under the house. Russell was our technician and approached the problem from outside the house, working retrograde from a trap in the front yard. I was skeptical but it worked when my efforts with a cable inside the house had failed. He was very professional and pleasant to deal with.  We asked him to install a cleanout closer to the house for future use and we were very satisfied with the work.

Tyler is the best! He came to our parent's house, knew exactly what the problem was, and explained it to us without the typical guesswork. I'd recommend him any time you need a good plumber.

Whether you're off on a beach getaway or a cross-country road trip, prepping your home before you leave helps ensure you come back to a comfortable and well-maintained space. While you might remember to lock the doors and set the lights on timers, many homeowners overlook one crucial area: the HVAC system.

In this brief article brought to you by Service Hero, we’ll give you a rough guide on preparing your HVAC system before turning on your security system and heading out on vacation. If you’d rather leave the HVAC services and prep to trained technicians, then call Service Hero to get in touch.

We Provide Professional Plumbing & HVAC Services

Tailored services to meet your specific needs and budget, ensuring optimal performance and comfort.

Adjust Your Thermostat (But Don’t Turn It Off)

You might be tempted to turn off your HVAC system completely to save energy, but that’s not always the best idea. Extreme temperatures – think scorching heat in the summer and frigid cold in the winter – can wreak havoc on your home. For instance, the winter cold can freeze and burst your water line!

Instead of turning the HVAC off completely, set your thermostat to a reasonable temperature that keeps your home safe without wasting energy. If you’re going on a summer vacation, set the thermostat to around 85 degrees; for the winter, set it to around 55 degrees.

Change Your Air Filters

A dirty air filter can restrict airflow and make your HVAC system work harder than it needs to. Before you leave, swap out your old filter for a clean one. This simple step can improve your system’s efficiency and prevent dust and allergens from circulating while you’re away. Plus, it’s one less thing to worry about when you return.

Close Blinds and Curtains

Think of this as added insulation. Reducing the amount of direct sunlight entering your home helps your HVAC system work less while you’re away. Plus, closed window coverings add an extra layer of security against prying eyes.

Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit

If you have an outdoor AC unit or heat pump, take a few minutes to clear away any debris, leaves, or overgrown plants. Good airflow is essential for your system to function properly. While you’re at it, make sure there’s nothing around the unit that could attract pests.

Check for Leaks and Drafts

Before you leave, do a quick walkthrough of your home to check for leaks or drafts.Common trouble spots include doors, windows, and ductwork. Sealing these leaks with weatherstripping or caulking helps your HVAC system maintain a more stable temperature.

Unplug Unnecessary Appliances and Devices

Many household electronics and appliances generate heat when plugged in. This can cause your HVAC system to work harder for no good reason. Unplug any non-essential devices like televisions, coffee makers, and computers before leaving. Plus, this also protects against power surges while you’re away.

Schedule Preventative Maintenance

If you’re planning to be away for an extended period, consider scheduling heating and air conditioning maintenance before you leave. A professional technician can inspect your system for potential issues, clean essential components, and make sure everything is running efficiently. This helps prevent surprises when you return home.

Why Bother Prepping Your HVAC System Anyway?

You might be thinking, “Do I really need to do all this?” The answer is yes! Taking these steps can:

  • Save you money on energy bills.
  •  Prevent costly repairs or damage to your home.
  • Make sure your home is comfortable when you return.
  • Give you peace of mind while you’re away.

If you ever need the expertise of a trained technician, you can call Service Hero. Our team is on standby to schedule a convenient maintenance appointment or arrange urgent air conditioning replacement for as soon as possible.
